There are seasons when God feels very close, and His voice can be heard when you listen.
Clear. Certain. Unmistakable. You don’t really “hear” it, you feel it. It sinks in and settles over you like a blanket of peace.
And then there are seasons where you’re still showing up, still trying, still believing…
but heaven feels quiet. You can’t feel the peace wrapped around you. You earn for it. It’s there.
Not angry.
Not gone.
Just still.
I happen to be experiencing a time such as this right now, and it’s much harder than I expected. I yearn for His closeness more than I thought I would. I want to close my eyes and automatically feel that unforgettable joy bubble up in my heart. Open my eyes in the morning and have my first thought be praise to God, I get to see one more day. Not silence… just nothing. I wouldn’t describe it as empty just quiet.
I lean towards thinking that I did something wrong. The devil whispers in my ear… you have messed up or He would be here.
Maybe the devil is right. Maybe I missed a step, disappointed God, or wandered too far from the path.
But the older I get and the more life I live, the more I’m learning this truth:
God is often the quietest when He’s doing the deepest work. Did you hear that… read it again because we really need to hear this one. God is working in us.
The ground doesn’t make noise while roots grow.
A horse doesn’t snort when he is learning and fully engaged.
Strength is formed in repetition, not from the sound of applause.
Some of the most faithful moments in our lives don’t look spiritual at all.
Quiet faith often hides in ordinary obedience. It looks like:
- getting out of bed when you’d rather hide
- choosing gentleness when bitterness would be easier
- continuing forward without answers
- trusting that obedience still matters, even without confirmation
- forgiving when holding a grudge is what you really want to do (this one is hard)
Quiet faith doesn’t mean weak faith at all, not even a little!
It means anchored faith. It means you stay if the waves are roaring or not making even a trickle of a sound.
If you’re in a season where you’re praying and not hearing much back, keep going.
If you’re doing the work without seeing fruit yet, keep going.
If your faith feels steady but unspectacular, keep going.
God sees what’s happening beneath the surface and nothing you’re doing in obedience is ever wasted… EVER.
Sometimes the quiet is not absence..
It’s preparation.
And when the time is right, the stillness will break, not with noise, but with purpose.
You are not behind. You are being built.
Lord, help us trust You in the quiet.
Strengthen our faith when answers feel far away.
Teach us to keep walking, even in stillness.
Amen
If you’re reading this in a quiet season, pause for a moment. What is one small act of obedience you’re still showing up for right now?
