You know that feeling. You finally carve out five minutes for yourself, maybe to put on a face cream or actually wash your face properly, and before you even finish, the guilt creeps in.
I should be doing laundry. The kids need something. I don’t have time for this.
Can I tell you something? That guilt is lying to you.
You Are Not a Vending Machine
You were not put on this earth to pour endlessly into everyone else until there is nothing left of you. And yet that is exactly what so many of us do, especially those of us who are caregivers, mothers, grandmothers, the ones everyone leans on.
We give and give until we are running on fumes, and then we feel guilty for even THINKING about refilling our own tank.
Caring for your skin is not indulgence. It is maintenance. You maintain your car. You maintain your home. Why would you not maintain the body you live in every single day?
What Five Minutes Really Means
A simple skincare routine does not have to be complicated or expensive. It does not require an hour in the bathroom or a shelf full of products. Five minutes in the morning and five minutes at night is enough to tell your body — and your soul — I matter too.
That is not selfish. That is survival.
When you care for your skin you are not stealing time from anyone. You are teaching everyone around you, especially your daughters and granddaughters, that women are worthy of care. That YOU are worthy of care.
The Woman in the Mirror
I want you to think about the woman you love most in this world. Your daughter. Your best friend. Your mother. If she came to you exhausted, depleted, with skin so dry it was cracking and eyes so tired they could barely stay open, would you tell her she was being selfish for wanting five minutes to herself?
Of course not. You would sit her down, hand her a warm cloth, and take care of her yourself if you had to.
Be that woman for yourself.
You Cannot Pour From an Empty Cup
The people who need you most need you WELL. They need you present, healthy, and whole, not hollowed out and running on empty. Taking five minutes for your skin is not time stolen from your family. It is an investment in being able to show up for them tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that.
You matter too. Not after everyone else is taken care of. Not someday when things slow down. Right now, exactly as you are, in all your tired and beautiful mess.
Start tonight. Wash your face. Put on your moisturizer. Look yourself in the mirror and say I am worth five minutes.
Because you are.
